What yarn and hook should I use for amigurumi?
Worsted weight — CYC 4 — with a 3.5 mm hook is the standard. Go one to two sizes below what the yarn band says, so the fabric is dense enough that stuffing cannot show through. Changing yarn weight changes the finished size, never the stitch counts.

- Worsted — CYC 4 — is the usual choice in English-language patterns: it works up fast, holds its shape and is easy to find. Sport and DK give finer detail on small pieces, and bulky is used when you want a large toy quickly.
- What hook size should I use for amigurumi?
- Go one to two sizes below what the yarn band says. Worsted usually calls for a 5 mm hook; for amigurumi use 3.5 mm. The tighter fabric is what stops stuffing from showing through between stitches.
- How do I adjust a crochet pattern for a different yarn weight?
- You do not change the stitch counts. Work the same rounds in the new yarn with its matching hook — the pattern still fits together, the toy simply comes out larger or smaller. Adjust only the safety eye size and the amount of stuffing.
- How much will my amigurumi change size if I switch yarn?
- Roughly in proportion to the gauge difference. Moving from worsted to bulky makes the piece about 40 percent taller and wider; moving down to sport makes it about 30 percent smaller. The converter shows the exact ratio for any pair.
- Can I hold two strands of thinner yarn instead?
- Yes, and it is a common fix when you cannot find a colour in the right weight. Two strands of DK held together behave close to bulky, and two strands of sport land near worsted.
