A bee is a single striped ball with two little wings, which makes it a good way to practise clean colour changes. Two stripes are enough; more and it starts to read as a wasp.

Before you start

Work in a continuous spiral without joining rounds, and move a stitch marker up as you go. Every dec is an invisible decrease. Numbers in brackets are the stitch count at the end of the round.

Abbreviations: MR magic ring · sc single crochet · inc two sc in one stitch · dec invisible decrease · st stitch.

Gauge is not critical, but the fabric must be dense enough that stuffing does not show through. If it does, drop a hook size.

Body

  • Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring [6]
  • Round 2: inc in each st around [12]
  • Round 3: [sc 1, inc] 6 times [18]
  • Round 4: [sc 2, inc] 6 times [24]
  • Round 5: [sc 3, inc] 6 times [30]
  • Round 6: [sc 4, inc] 6 times [36]
  • Rounds 7–14: sc in each st around [36]
  • Round 15: [sc 4, dec] 6 times [30]
  • Round 16: [sc 3, dec] 6 times [24]
  • Round 17: [sc 2, dec] 6 times [18]
  • Round 18: [sc 1, dec] 6 times [12]
  • Round 19: dec around [6]

Work rounds 1 to 7 in yellow, rounds 8 and 9 in black, rounds 10 and 11 in yellow, rounds 12 and 13 in black, then yellow to the end. Place the eyes between rounds 5 and 6. Stuff firmly.

Wings — make 2

  • Round 1: 5 sc in magic ring [5]
  • Round 2: inc in each st around [10]
  • Rounds 3–5: sc in each st around [10]

In white. Do not stuff. Flatten and close.

Stinger

  • Round 1: 3 sc in magic ring [3]
  • Rounds 2–3: sc in each st around [3]

In black. Do not stuff.

Assembly

  1. Sew the wings to the top of the body across the first black stripe, angled out like a V.
  2. Sew the stinger to the centre of the last round.
  3. Embroider two antennae in black from the top of the head, each with a French knot at the tip.

Making it a different size

Every stitch count here scales together. To make this 8 cm bumble bee larger or smaller, scale the magic ring and each round by the same factor — the pattern resizer does the arithmetic and rewrites the increase rounds. To keep the size but use a different yarn, the yarn weight converter shows what changes.
