Head and body are one piece, so a penguin has very little sewing. The white belly is a flat patch sewn on afterwards, which is easier than colour changes and gives a cleaner edge.

Before you start

Work in a continuous spiral without joining rounds, and move a stitch marker up as you go. Every dec is an invisible decrease. Numbers in brackets are the stitch count at the end of the round.

Abbreviations: MR magic ring · sc single crochet · inc two sc in one stitch · dec invisible decrease · st stitch.

Gauge is not critical, but the fabric must be dense enough that stuffing does not show through. If it does, drop a hook size.

Body

  • Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring [6]
  • Round 2: inc in each st around [12]
  • Round 3: [sc 1, inc] 6 times [18]
  • Round 4: [sc 2, inc] 6 times [24]
  • Round 5: [sc 3, inc] 6 times [30]
  • Round 6: [sc 4, inc] 6 times [36]
  • Rounds 7–16: sc in each st around [36]
  • Round 17: [sc 4, dec] 6 times [30]
  • Round 18: [sc 3, dec] 6 times [24]
  • Round 19: [sc 2, dec] 6 times [18]
  • Round 20: [sc 1, dec] 6 times [12]
  • Round 21: dec around [6]

Place the safety eyes between rounds 9 and 10, six stitches apart. Stuff firmly, keeping the base flat so it stands.

Belly patch

  • Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring [6]
  • Round 2: inc in each st around [12]
  • Round 3: [sc 1, inc] 6 times [18]
  • Round 4: [sc 2, inc] 6 times [24]
  • Round 5: sc in each st around [24]

In white. This makes a flat disc; do not stuff.

Wings — make 2

  • Round 1: 4 sc in magic ring [4]
  • Round 2: inc in each st around [8]
  • Rounds 3–8: sc in each st around [8]

Do not stuff. Flatten and sc across the top to close.

Feet — make 2

  • Round 1: 4 sc in magic ring [4]
  • Round 2: inc in each st around [8]
  • Rounds 3–4: sc in each st around [8]

In orange. Flatten and close.

Beak

  • Round 1: 4 sc in magic ring [4]
  • Rounds 2–3: sc in each st around [4]

In orange. Stuff with a pinch of fibrefill.

Assembly

  1. Sew the belly patch to the front of the body, from just below the eyes to the base.
  2. Sew the beak between the eyes, slightly lower.
  3. Attach a wing to each side at round 12, angled back.
  4. Sew the feet to the front of the base so they peek out from under the belly.

Making it a different size

Every stitch count here scales together. To make this 11 cm penguin larger or smaller, scale the magic ring and each round by the same factor — the pattern resizer does the arithmetic and rewrites the increase rounds. To keep the size but use a different yarn, the yarn weight converter shows what changes.
