A sitting cat needs a body that is wider at the base than the top, so it stays upright without a weighted bottom. The tail curls around the base and does most of the balancing.
Before you start
Work in a continuous spiral without joining rounds, and move a stitch marker up
as you go. Every dec is an invisible decrease.
Numbers in brackets are the stitch count at the end of the round.
Abbreviations: MR magic ring · sc single crochet · inc two sc in one stitch · dec invisible decrease · st stitch.
Gauge is not critical, but the fabric must be dense enough that stuffing does not show through. If it does, drop a hook size.
Head
- Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring [6]
- Round 2: inc in each st around [12]
- Round 3: [sc 1, inc] 6 times [18]
- Round 4: [sc 2, inc] 6 times [24]
- Round 5: [sc 3, inc] 6 times [30]
- Rounds 6–9: sc in each st around [30]

- Round 12: [sc 1, dec] 6 times [12]
- Round 13: dec around [6]
Place the safety eyes between rounds 7 and 8, five stitches apart. A cat reads best with the eyes set closer than on a bear.

Work the front eight stitches of rounds 8 to 14 in cream for the chest. Stuff firmly, keeping the base wide.
Ears — make 2
- Round 1: 4 sc in magic ring [4]
- Round 2: inc in each st around [8]
- Round 3: sc in each st around [8]
Do not stuff. Flatten into a triangle before sewing.
Front legs — make 2
- Round 1: 5 sc in magic ring [5]
- Rounds 2–6: sc in each st around [5]
Work the first two rounds in cream for the paws. Stuff lightly.
Tail
- Round 1: 5 sc in magic ring [5]
- Rounds 2–15: sc in each st around [5]
Stuff very lightly so the tail curls.
Assembly
- Sew the head to the top of the body, tilted slightly to one side.
- Attach the ears to rounds 2 and 3 of the head, six stitches apart, pointing up and slightly out.
- Sew the front legs to the front of the body at round 14, hanging straight down.
- Curl the tail around one side of the base and sew along its length so it stays put.
- Embroider a small triangular nose and two short lines for the mouth, and three whisker stitches on each cheek if you want them.
Making it a different size
Every stitch count here scales together. To make this 12 cm sitting cat larger or smaller, scale the magic ring and each round by the same factor — the pattern resizer does the arithmetic and rewrites the increase rounds. To keep the size but use a different yarn, the yarn weight converter shows what changes.
